China reportedly let AI control a satellite, which then observed rivals India and Japan
In brief, it has been reported that China's State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS) has granted control of a satellite to artificial intelligence.
According to a journal paper published by the LIESMARS team and cited by a South China Morning Post report, the AI was allowed to operate the Qimingxing 1 satellite, which is used for remote sensing experimentation. The paper claims that the AI specifically targeted regions in India that house an army unit involved in recent border skirmishes with China, as well as a Japanese port that occasionally receives US naval vessels.
It is unclear why the AI was focused on those two particular targets, as Chinese media had previously stated that the Qimingxing 1 was an experimental satellite intended for use by students at Wuhan University.
