AI 'prompt engineer' jobs can pay up to $375,000 a year and don't always require a background in tech
The increasing popularity of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, has led to a surge in demand for "prompt engineers." These professionals specialise in training AI chatbots to enhance their responses to user queries. The compensation for these roles can range up to $375,000 per year and a STEM degree is not always a requirement.
Anthropic - an AI safety and research firm, recently advertised an opening for a "prompt engineer and librarian" position with a salary range between $280,000 to $375,000. The job entails creating a library of top-quality prompts to execute various tasks, along with building interactive tools and tutorials to teach prompt engineering skills to clients.
While familiarity with large language models and basic programming expertise is preferred, Anthropic welcomes applicants with or without formal technical qualifications. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has acknowledged the importance of prompt engineers and the significant impact their work can have on chatbot performance.
Anna Bernstein, a prompt engineer at Copy.ai, said that she relishes the job's "mad scientist" component, where she experiments with various prompts and observes their outcomes. Although prompt engineering can be an unusual mix of literary background and analytical thinking, it is a rapidly growing field.
PromptBase, for example, offers a prompt marketplace that connects prompt engineers with potential employers. Despite the rising demand for prompt engineers, some experts remain cautious about the sustainability of the trend. Ethan Mollick, a professor at the Wharton School, tweeted in February that prompt engineering might not be a significant occupation in the future.
Nonetheless, being able to communicate effectively with generative AI tools through prompts remains a valuable skill in the present, according to Adrian Weller, a director of research in machine learning at the University of Cambridge.
