Mark Zuckerberg is trying to retain users by using chatbots

Meta, the company previously known as Facebook, is working on a variety of chatbots powered by machine intelligence that have various personalities and functions. Chatbots are developed to have human-like characteristics and conversations. Some examples of the bots are a bot that imitates Abraham Lincoln and a bot that gives travel advice in a surfer style. The bots will offer services such as search, suggestions, and amusement.

The project is part of Meta’s strategy to compete with other platforms like TikTok and to capitalize on the popularity of AI, especially after the success of ChatGPT. The chatbots could also gather more information from users to improve content and ad personalization, which is Meta’s main source of income.

However, the project also raises some ethical and social issues. Some experts worry about the privacy and manipulation implications of collecting large numbers of data from chatbot interactions. Meta claims that the data is essential for enhancing personalization. Some competitors like Snap have already experimented with personality chatbots, with sponsored links.

In the long term, Meta may create an avatar bot for its metaverse vision. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is very interested in the AI opportunity, and imagines virtual assistants, coaches, and customer service bots. Meta is investing a lot in generative AI to create natural language bots.

Meta will likely have some safeguards to ensure the quality and appropriateness of the chatbot inputs and outputs. Previous Meta bots have generated false and hateful content, causing controversy.

AI experts will monitor the new Meta bots for potential biases or harmful content. But Meta sees a huge potential to engage users with realistic AI personas.

Meta still maintains that bots will not replace human interactions, but only supplement them. But given the size of Meta’s user base, its bots could have a lot of data and influence. User protection and oversight are crucial.

Ethicists argue that advanced bots may exploit users’ emotions and trust by creating lifelike relationships. Transparency about the bot's abilities and limitations is vital to prevent deception.

While AI engagement bots pose some challenges, they could also improve user experience and connections if used wisely. The technology is still emerging. Its risks and rewards are yet to be fully discovered.
