This AI clock uses ChatGPT to generate tiny poems that tell the time
ChatGPT is the most popular tool and everyday people are discovering new ways to use it.
The clock created by designer and blogger Matt Webb uses AI to generate a short rhyme to brighten your day. It can tell the time for every minute of the day.
This DIY project is going to become a commercial product one day.
Multifunctional AI Clock (designed by Matt Webb)
Webb explained that the clock is powered by an old Inky wHAT screen and a Raspberry Pi that he previously had set up as a regular text clock. He played with OpenAI’s language models for a while and had the idea of connecting the two.
According to Webb, ChatGPT operates on a single prompt and incorporates OpenAI's API for its functionality. The time serves as an essential parameter, informing the AI on what it should respond with, two lines that rhyme with each other while remaining meaningful and creative.
Webb mentions that ChatGPT's prompt includes details of the clock's physical location within a room. This inclusion enables the clock to communicate as a physical entity, as exemplified in the phrase, "In cosy shelves, I do reside, / It’s nearly noon, the clock confides."
It is worth noting that the clock does not draw from preset text catalogues; instead, it generates new, unique messaging for each display. Although Webb currently uses ChatGPT due to its cost-effectiveness, he would prefer the clock to connect with GPT-3.
Webb says the feedback to his clock with artificial intelligence has been so enthusiastic that he is now exploring two ways to bring the project to market. First, to provide hackers with a kit to create their own clocks, and second, to create a commercial product that can be plugged in. It's easy to imagine that additional features could be built into it, such as a regulator that allows you to change the tone of the tiny verses, from groggy to sombre, depending on your mood.
Matt Webb decided to explore options and has no idea of when these might be available or the price of product. The only main priority of the clock is to get this into people's hands.
