EasyJet to use AI in partnering hotels to reduce food waste
AI will be used to look after the reduction of food waste at one of the company’s most popular destinations, the Island of Tenerife.
easyJet will work closely with Winnow, a profit food waste solutions enterprise. The project is expected to be launched in the Bahia Principle Sunlight Costa Adeje resort and it is a result of the easyJet and Oxford University’s Impact Lab cooperation, whose original aim was to provide students with transferable skills for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The technology, produced by Winnow, turned out to be of great help for reduction of food waste.
The Winnow technology learns “see” food waste through a motion camera in the terminal.
Data is processed promptly and is kept in the cloud afterwards. Hotel teams later get the reports that showcase waste levels, which help to improve operations, which, in its turn, leads to a decrease in food waste by half within 12-18 months and lowering food purchasing costs by around 10%.
The Oxford University students will continue to work to make easyJet Holidays a leading company in sustainable tourism.
